WEST, Irene Patricia (née Carthy) August 17, 1920 - July 12, 2017 Irene passed away peacefully with family by her side on Wednesday, after living independently to the age of 96. Irene lived a life devoted to others, first doing her part in the war effort at Sunshine Munitions in Waterloo, then after the war, working with the Anglican church doing missions work in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan; conducting Sunday schools and church services in under-serviced areas. After returning to Ontario, she worked as a case worker with the Children's Aid Society in Waterloo County and later operated Preston Nursery School from 1963 to 1971. More recently, Irene devoted her efforts to knitting hats for premature babies at CMH. She also loved to spend time reading, painting watercolours, and keeping her mind sharp with crossword puzzles. She will be dearly missed by her daughters Rose-Mary Baird (Eric) and Linda Addley (Steve), grandchildren Emily Baird, Liam Baird, Susan Berg (Jason), Michael Addley, great-grandchildren Canden Addley, Caitlin and Colin Berg, her sister Joan Sergeantson, and many nieces and nephews. Irene was predeceased by her husband Harold West, her parents Harold and Mary Carthy, and her sister Catherine Belanger. The family wishes to thank Dr. Narayan and all the staff at Freeport Hospital. Friends and relatives are invited to a Visitation at Barthel Funeral Home (556 Queenston Rd. Cambridge) on Monday, July 17th from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, July 18th at St. John's Anglican Church (567 Queenston Rd.
